Kathmandu Garbage Blockade Lifted After Government Pledge

Garbage piles from Capital Kathmandu are finally being cleared after residents near the Bancharedanda landfill site agreed to lift their blockade, following a government pledge to meet their demands within 15 days.

Urban Development Minister Kulman Ghising visited the landfill area on Monday, holding talks with local residents and representatives to reach an understanding that ended nearly a week of disruption to waste disposal in Kathmandu.

Local leaders had blocked access to the landfill, accusing the government of failing to implement earlier agreements related to compensation, infrastructure and health facilities.

After Ghising promised swift action, residents allowed garbage trucks to resume operations.

Officials said the ministry and local stakeholders will document and finalize a list of commitments that can be fulfilled within two weeks. Talks are set to continue in the capital later today to formalize the plan.

With the blockade now lifted, hundreds of trucks carrying waste have begun moving again toward Bancharedanda, restoring a sense of relief in one of South Asia’s fastest-growing cities – where waste management remains a chronic urban crisis.
