Iran Claims Downing of Two US Warplanes
Iranian authorities say they have shot down two US military aircraft in separate incidents, escalating tensions in the region, though details remain contested and independently unverified.
According to Iranian state media, the first aircraft reported to be a US F-15 fighter jet was downed over Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province in southern Iran.
Two crew members were onboard one has been rescued, while a weapon systems officer is still missing.
Iranian state television has broadcast footage it claims shows the wreckage of a downed US fighter jet, as authorities step up efforts to locate a missing American crew member.
Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported that Iranian forces have launched a search operation after the aircraft was hit by an air defence system. Officials have also urged civilians to help locate the pilot, with reports of rewards being offered.
Iran further claims a second US aircraft was targeted over the Persian Gulf.
