Gaza Hit by Storm Byron, 14 People Killed
Heavy rains and strong winds from Storm Byron have caused widespread destruction across the Gaza Strip, killing at least 14 people and injuring others, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Interior and National Security.
Rescue teams and local residents have been clearing rubble and assessing damage after buildings collapsed due to the storm.
“Even the houses that are still standing are not fit for living. They are not really secure,” said one resident.
The ministry reported that five people died overnight into Friday when a house sheltering displaced civilians in Bir an-Naaja, northern Gaza, collapsed.
Earlier, two more deaths were reported in Gaza City’s Remal neighborhood when a wall fell onto tents, while another person died in Shati refugee camp and a newborn in al-Mawasi succumbed to freezing temperatures.
Medical staff have also noted a rise in deaths caused by exposure.
Storm Byron has compounded the hardship for Gaza’s residents, nearly all of whom were displaced during more than two years of conflict.
Relief agencies continue to warn of worsening humanitarian conditions as families face flooding, structural collapses and exposure to harsh weather. (Agencies)
