Food Imports Rise at Birgunj Customs

The Birgunj Customs Office,a key trade gateway on the Nepal–India border recorded food imports worth Rs 11.57 billion (approximately $82 million USD) in the first six months of Nepal’s fiscal year 2082/83 BS (2025–26), according to information officer Uday Singh Bista.
The overall volume of food imports during this period was slightly lower than in the same period last year, when imports totaled Rs 11.78 billion (around $83 million USD).
Of the total imports, 150,430,000 kilograms of rice valued at Rs 5.68 billion (about 40 million USD) were brought in, compared with Rs 6.9 billion (49 million USD) in the same period last year.
Other major food imports included maize worth around 24 million USD, lentils valued at about 11 million USD, malt worth 2.3 million USD and buckwheat, millet and other grains totaling approximately 1.7 million USD.
The figures reflect a slight decline in food imports compared to the previous fiscal year, highlighting trends in Nepal’s agricultural import sector. (RSS)
