Fire at Dhaka Airport Disrupts Flights for Hours, Blaze Now Under Control

Flight operations at Bangladesh’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport were halted for several hours on Saturday after a major fire broke out in the airport’s cargo village section. Authorities have confirmed that the blaze is now fully under control, with no casualties reported so far.

Agencies quoted officials as saying that the fire started around 2:15 p.m. local time in a warehouse area used for cargo handling. Thick smoke quickly spread through parts of the terminal complex, forcing the suspension of all flight arrivals and departures as firefighters battled the flames.

The disruption lasted for nearly six hours, with several international flights diverted to India’s Kolkata and Chittagong. Operations gradually resumed after 9 p.m., according to airport officials.

While the extent of the damage is still being assessed, officials confirmed that no injuries or fatalities occurred.

Bangladesh’s Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the blaze. Authorities said preventive measures would be reinforced to ensure such incidents do not recur.

The Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport is Bangladesh’s busiest gateway. It handles thousands of passengers and large volumes of cargo daily. (Agencies)
