EC Endorses Thapa-led Congress Citing Three Key Reasons

Special Convention elected president of Nepali Congress Gagan Thapa and his central committee has been recognized by the election commission as the official party.
In a majority decision, the election commission office bearers, decided to legitimize the Thapa side as the Nepali Congress party that would get the election symbol tree and four-star flag.
In the Friday evening’s much anticipated verdict, the commission said the decision was based on the documents submitted by both the sides.
Sources at the commission said of the three office bearers, two were in favour of Thapa’s side while one was for Sher Bahadur Deuba led side
Among the three reasons reportedly sighted by the commission, the central executive committee not rejecting the proposal to call special general convention during its three-month long maturity period was in itself a green signal to organize the special gathering.
Deuba side on the other hand has flayed the Election Commission’s decision stating that it was against the law related to political parties, statute of Nepali Congress and past precedents.
The side has warned to wage legal as well as street battle against the decision, meaning the issue will soon reach the Supreme Court’s full bench.
