DNA Sample Collection Center in Operation in Flood-hit Area

The Nepal Police have set up a collection centre in Nuwakot to take samples for deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) testing to identify people missing in the Bhotekoshi River flood. Earlier, family members of the victims were compelled to go to Kathmandu from Rasuwa and Nuwakot to give samples.

To make it easier for families affected by the flood, a sample collection center has been set up in Bidur, informed Deputy Inspector General of Police Dr. Damodar Paudel. He said that they believe taking samples from family members of missing persons for testing will help ascertain the identity of the bodies recovered from the flood affected sites.

“After reports that several people from Nuwakot and Rasuwa went missing in the flood, DNA testing is being initiated o identify the recovered bodies by taking samples from family members,” said Dr. Paudel.

“The Nepal Police Hospital in Maharajgunj has set up a collection center in Bidur to make it easier for people to provide DNA samples without having to go to Kathmandu.” it is shared. According to him, 2,564 applications have been received in Nuwakot reporting people as missing due to the flood in Bhotekoshi and Trishuli Rivers.

Among them, 192 bodies have been recovered so far. The police have stated that only 18 have been identified. The remaining bodies, once identified, will be handed over to their families, and DNA testing procedures have been expedited for identification, police said. (RSS)
