At Least 50 Youths Detained

Nepal Police detained 50 individuals from the group Gen Z United on Saturday morning after they gathered at Maitighar Mandala to stage a demonstration without official authorization, according to police sources.

The District Police Range, Kathmandu, said the detainees, 26 men and 24 women, were taken under control for questioning. Authorities cited the lack of prior permission from the local administration and concerns over potential confrontations with other youth groups as reasons for the detentions.

Police said the preventive action was taken to “avert possible security risks” and maintain public order in the area, a frequent site for political demonstrations in the capital.

Gen Z United leader Madan Karki, however, criticized the move as “undemocratic,” saying the group’s request to hold a peaceful gathering had been denied by the District Administration Office.

“Our demonstration was intended to promote unity among Gen Z groups, not create unrest. But we were prevented from expressing our views,” Karki told reporters.

The incident comes amid increased political mobilization and heightened vigilance by security forces following recent youth-led movements in the capital.
