Nepal Asserts Sovereignty Over Lipulekh

The Government of Nepal has issued a formal clarification regarding the opening of the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage route through Lipulekh, addressing the growing skepticism and questions raised by the media and the general public.
In an official statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) on May 3, 2026, the government reiterated its unwavering stance on its territorial integrity.

The Ministry emphasized that according to the 1816 Sugauli Treaty, the territories of Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh, and Kalapani, situated east of the Mahakali River, are inseparable parts of Nepal. According to the statement Nepal has officially communicated its concerns and clear position to both India and China through diplomatic channels.
The statement notes that Nepal has consistently urged the Indian government to cease any unilateral activities in the area, including road construction, expansion, border trade, and pilgrimage tours, which infringe upon Nepali sovereignty.
Furthermore, the Ministry clarified that China has also been formally notified of Nepal’s official stance regarding the Lipulekh region.
The Nepal government expressed its continued commitment to resolving border-related issues through diplomatic dialogue.
