Hundreds Stranded as Heavy Snowfall Blocks Key Highway in Western Nepal

Heavy snowfall in western Nepal has blocked a key section of the country’s Mid-Hill Highway, leaving more than commuters stranded along the route, authorities said.

The obstruction occurred in eastern Rukum district (Rukum East), in Nepal’s western region, where continuous snowfall since last night has shut down the Lukum–Patihalna stretch in Bhume Rural Municipality–1.

According to the District Police Office, dozens of vehicles including long-distance night buses traveling from Kathmandu have been stranded on the highway.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Keshavraj Gyawali said at least seven buses, one jeep and five motorcycles are stuck in the affected area.

“The passengers remain stranded as snowfall continues and road clearance has not yet been possible,” Gyawali said, adding that ongoing snow and rain are making rescue and reopening efforts difficult.

Authorities also reported that communication services in the area have been disrupted, further complicating coordination for rescue operations.

Local authorities are working with security agencies to assist stranded passengers, but worsening weather conditions continue to pose significant challenges.

The Mid-Hill Highway, which runs east-west across Nepal’s hilly regions, is a vital alternative route to the southern plains and is frequently affected by extreme weather during winter months.
