South Korean Volunteers Engage in Cleaning Flood-hit Areas of Nuwakot

A volunteers’ team from South Korea is involved in cleanliness and recovery efforts in the areas hit hard by the August 26 flood disaster that struck the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli river system. The eight-member team, arrived in Nepal last week, acquired an official permission from the local government to remove mud and sludge from the houses at Dhunge Bazaar of Bidur Municipality-1 in Nuwakot.
They will be working for 10 days. Ward chair of Bidur- 1, Lenin Ranjit, issued permission for the team which is seen clearing the sites amidst a scorching heat. The team led by Lee khang-woo has the members as Lee Chae-jung, Shin Jeong-hun, Kim Ho-yong, Yoon Ho-yong, and Lee Young-cheol. It also comprises 84-year-old Kim Sang- ki.
According to locals, Kim’s engagement in voluntary works in such an old age in a foreign land serves as an inspiration to them. The arrival of 911 search and rescue team was facilitated by the Lions International District 325 I Nepal and Lions International District 354 D Korea.
It has engaged in the efforts to make the area suitable for resettlement, promoting the message that “recovery from disaster is possible through collective efforts” and that when one community is in crisis, others should come together to provide humanitarian support.
The voluntary squad was in Nepal during the post-earthquake rescue and relief efforts in 2015 as well. It is said it has already visited over 54 nations for rescue initiatives. In view of Lions District 325 Nepal’s cabinet secretary Anuj Kumar Shrestha, this sort of initiation reflects relations between Lions of two nations in the humanitarian service.
The team is scheduled to return home on October 7, said language translator for the team, Anup Jung Basnet. According to National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, 1,451 people died and 5,745 are missing in the Bhotekoshi flood, while thousands of houses have been washed away. (RSS)
