PM Shah Returns Home After UNGA Visit

Prime Minister Balendra Shah has returned to Nepal after leading the Nepali delegation to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The Prime Minister arrived at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu after travelling back via Doha. Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had earlier announced that Shah would return to Kathmandu on September 26 after attending the high-level week of the UN General Assembly.

During his visit, Shah addressed the UN General Assembly on September 24, placing Nepal’s climate vulnerability, the recent Bhotekoshi–Trishuli disaster and climate justice at the centre of Nepal’s message.

He called for greater international support for climate-vulnerable countries and proposed a Himalayan Climate Resilience Mechanism involving Nepal, India and China, with cooperation on satellite data, glacial-lake monitoring, early-warning systems and disaster response.

Shah also met UN Secretary-General António Guterres at UN Headquarters, where the two discussed Nepal’s climate-related challenges and the need for support for recovery and resilience following the recent disaster.

During the New York visit, the Prime Minister also took part in briefings and official programmes organised by Nepal’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is scheduled to hold a press briefing on the Prime Minister’s visit, where further details of the delegation’s engagements and outcomes are expected.
