Nepal expands diplomatic reach to 187 countries with Namibia ties

Nepal has expanded its diplomatic relations to 187 countries after formally establishing ties with the Republic of Namibia on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal and Namibia’s Minister of International Relations and Trade, Selma Ashipala-Musavyi, signed a Joint Communiqué establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries at a brief ceremony at the United Nations Headquarters.

The two ministers held discussions on a range of issues of mutual interest ahead of the signing, according to Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The discussions also covered the human and physical impact of Nepal’s recent devastating climate-related disaster.

Both sides emphasized the importance of identifying new avenues for bilateral cooperation and strengthening collaboration for the shared progress and prosperity of Nepal and Namibia and their peoples.

The establishment of diplomatic relations with Namibia comes amid Nepal’s intensified diplomatic engagements during the high-level week of the 81st UN General Assembly.

With the latest agreement, Namibia becomes the 187th country with which Nepal has established diplomatic relations.
