Nepal Post Bags Innovation Award 2026

Nepal Post has bagged this year’s ‘Innovation Award’ presented by Asian- Pacific Postal Union-APPU for its service in rural areas. The award was presented to Department of Postal Service through the 14th APPU Congress organised in Bangkok of Thailand from August 31-September 4, shared Director General of the Department, Man Maya Pangeni.

Appreciating the initiatives of Nepal Post in expansion of postal service even at rural areas as a government courier service, the special award was conferred as ‘Service in Remote Areas’ title. The initiative of directly delivering documents such as passports, driving licenses, academic certificates and health reports to citizens’ doorsteps was considered a key basis for the award, she mentioned.

A three-member delegation led by Director General Pangeni had participated in the 14th APPU Congress from Nepal. The delegation participated in different sessions and briefed about the future status of postal system, its modernization, activities carried out so far and government’s priorities.

Saying there are different challenges in running postal service due to Nepal’s difficult territory, Pangeni underlined that improvement works including infrastructure development are underway to provide postal services even in remote areas with poor roads and communication infrastructures.

The role of postal services is expanding with an objective of taking government services at doorsteps of citizens as well as making every service simple, fast and reliable, she opined.

Similarly, under APPU, Nepal had also expressed its views on cross-border e-commerce and the expansion of the regional postal transportation network. At the APPU Congress, voices were raised about developing the postal network as an effective medium to take Nepal’s local and original products to the international market.

Director General Pangeni said that Nepal has emphasized the need for cooperation among member countries so that the postal service can act as a courier bridge to connect small entrepreneurs, farmers, and rural community products to the market, and to help send Nepal’s small producers to the world market through regional e-commerce and postal delivery routes through the Asia-Pacific region.

In the plenary of the Congress, special time was given to Nepal. On that occasion, Director General Pangeni also provided information about the damage caused by the devastating floods in Nepal.

She shared that during disasters, when roads, bridges, and telecommunications services are disrupted, the importance of postal and communication networks increases even more. Director General Pangeni said that during disasters, the postal service’s reach is crucial for delivering information, relief materials, medicines, and essential government services to the citizens.

Through the APPU Congress, Nepal has also highlighted the need for international support to build a modern, reliable, inclusive, and citizen-centered postal system. Nepal has requested the international community to help with technology transfer, employee capacity building, digital systems, e-commerce, and the development of eco-friendly technology and disaster-resilient postal infrastructure.

Representatives from 32 member countries of the Asia-Pacific region participated in the 14th APPU Congress. At the congress, discussions were held on modernizing regional postal services, digital transformation, cross-border trade, mail transport, and cooperation among member countries. (RSS)
