Canada’s PM Vows to Match US tariffs “Dollar for Dollar” as Trade Talks Fail
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney suspended trade talks with the United States government late Friday due to lack of progress “to meet our objectives for Canadians”.
Carney announced this decision in an official statement on his social media a few minutes before the midnight deadline struck.
In the announcement Carney added that “as the US imposes 50% tariffs, we will match those tariffs dollar for dollar to protect our interests and businesses”.
The US has imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian imports worth $20 billion as of Saturday morning, following the failure of last-minute trade negotiations between the two countries.
The tariffs came into effect at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday.
