Successful Liver Transplantation Carried Out on Five-year-old Girl
A five-year-old girl has undergone a successful liver transplant at KIST Teaching Hospital in Imadol, Lalitpur.
The liver transplant was carried out at the KIST Transplant Center on August 18. The donor was the girl’s 33-year-old mother, the hospital’s Managing Director Dr Abhishek Thapa informed.
According to Dr Thapa, this is an important achievement in terms of the development of pediatric liver transplant services in Nepal.
The girl who was in a serious health condition due to Wilson’s disease was brought to KIST Teaching Hospital for treatment. Her health condition was very critical before the transplant.
Dr Thapa shared that the liver transplant surgery was carried out after the transplant receiver’s health condition was stabilized through about a month of joint treatment by various specialist doctors, intensive care, and continuous monitoring.
The hospital chairman, Ashish Thapa, said that successfully completing a pediatric liver transplant in a private hospital in Nepal is a matter of pride.
“The hospital has been continuously investing in developing skilled personnel, technology, and infrastructure with the aim of providing such advanced treatment services in Nepal. The success in transplanting liver from a living donor to a five-year-old child has encouraged expanding more complex and specialized treatment services for children in Nepal,” he said.
According to hospital’s managing director Dr Abhishek Thapa, the successful liver transplant on the five-year-old girl is not just a milestone for KIST but also an important achievement for the entire Nepali health sector.
He expressed a commitment to further strengthen the specialist team, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and coordinated treatment system needed to treat complex health problems in children. (RSS)
