Kathmandu’s Canvas Comes Alive: Himalayan Art Festival 2026 Returns to Babar Mahal

As monsoon clouds drift over the valley, Kathmandu is preparing for a different kind of storm — one of colour, craft, and creative energy.

From August 21 to 27 (5 to 11 Bhadra, 2083), the Nepal Art Council in Babar Mahal will throw open its doors to the Himalayan Art Festival 2026, a week-long celebration that promises to turn the gallery into the beating heart of Nepal’s contemporary art scene.

Organized by E-Arts Nepal (Modern & Contemporary Nepali Art), the festival is far more than an exhibition — it’s a gathering point for painters, sculptors, calligraphers, poets, collectors, and curious wanderers alike, all drawn together by a shared devotion to Nepali visual and traditional craft traditions.

An Evening to Remember

The festival opens in style on Friday, August 21, at 5:30 PM, with Anjana Shakya, Co-Founder of Bodhisattva International, presiding over the inaugural ceremony.

The evening’s emotional centerpiece will be “Honor to the Maestro,” a tribute to senior artist Batsa Gopal Vaidya, whose decades of work have left an indelible mark on Nepali art.

The same evening will also see the presentation of the Prashanta Art Award 2026, an initiative dedicated to spotlighting and uplifting the country’s emerging young talents — a fitting pairing of legacy and future promise under one roof.

Seven Days, Many Voices

Beyond the gallery walls, the festival unfolds as a living cultural calendar:

A Week Worth Wandering Into

The galleries stay open until 7:00 PM every evening through August 27 — plenty of time to wander in, and perhaps, walk out seeing Kathmandu a little differently.
