BJP Triumph Sparks Bihar Celebrations
Supporters of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are celebrating a sweeping win in Bihar, where the BJP-led alliance secured 202 of 243 seats in the state assembly its biggest victory there to date.
Modi hailed the outcome as “a win for democracy itself”, while the BJP rejected opposition claims that a revision of voter lists favoured the ruling party.
The Election Commission also dismissed the allegations.
Bihar registered a record 66.91% turnout across the 6 and 11 November polling days.
The BJP’s coalition, which includes the Janata Dal (United) led by outgoing chief minister Nitish Kumar, comfortably outpaced the opposition bloc of Congress, the RJD and smaller regional parties.
Opposition leaders have yet to respond publicly to the result.
Bihar, India’s poorest state and home to more than 74 million voters, has long been a challenging battleground for the BJP.
The emphatic victory is likely to shape momentum ahead of key elections next year in West Bengal, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, where the party continues to struggle for a foothold.
