Hong Kong Ends Transit Visa for Nepalis, Effective Today

Hong Kong has officially removed the transit visa requirement for Nepali passport holders, a rule that had remained in place for nearly two decades.

The new provision came into effect today, 15 November 2025, easing travel for Nepalis transiting through Hong Kong International Airport.

According to the Consulate General of Nepal in Hong Kong, the change applies to passengers travelling from Nepal to third countries and those flying to Nepal via Hong Kong, provided they remain within the airport’s transit area.

The mission said the decision follows sustained diplomatic efforts and formal requests made to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government.

Since June 2005, Nepalis had been required to secure a transit visa even for brief airport layovers.

Nepal’s Consulate expressed confidence that the move will significantly ease travel and encourage more Nepali passengers to use Hong Kong as a transit hub.

It also described the decision as a positive gesture that strengthens Nepal–Hong Kong ties.

“This step by the Hong Kong government is commendable and will help enhance bilateral relations,” the Consulate stated, extending thanks on behalf of the Government of Nepal.
